Recently Google announced a new policy to anonymize their server logs after 18-24 months.
Now Google explained, why they remember information about searches on their official blog.
Three factors were critical. One was maintaining our ability to continue to improve the quality of our search services. Another was to protect our systems and our users from fraud and abuse. The third was complying—and anticipating compliance—with possible data retention requirements.
Google also explained little bit on the above 3 factors in the post linked above.
You can protect yourself from Google snooping for the most part simply by not using their personalized services. If all you need is search, stick to that and stay away from the person accounts.
