Botnets based Click Fraud - A case study by Google

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

Google Adwords blog announced about the paper published by them on “The Anatomy of Clickbot.A” available as PDF. The Anatomy of Clickbot.A is a botnet which Google’s Click Quality and Security Teams discussed last year. Botnets are networks of infected computers that can be controlled by a master computer.

MA. Neil Daswani, a software engineer and contributing author of “The Anatomy of Clickbot.A” said

Clickbot.A is an example of a botnet operator attempting a click fraud attack against syndicated search engines. Google was able to identify clicks on our advertisers’ ads that exhibited Clickbot.A-like patterns and flagged them as invalid. While Clickbot.A is a specific example of a botnet application that conducted click fraud, botnets can also be used for keylogging, distributed denial of service (DDoS), and other types of attacks.

This paper from Google will help all parties on the internet in managing botnets and other similar threats.

Google Adwords - avoids unintentional clicking on ADs

Friday, April 6th, 2007

Google Adwords has announced the two changes made to improve both user and advertiser experience. The changes are,

  • The top sponsored links displayed with blue background are changed to yellow background.
  • To avoid unintentional clicking on ads, The users have to click on the link on the top line of the ad instead of clicking anywhere on the ad. Google will count only these clicks.

Many would have noticed these changes earlier. The high quality ads will have this change and will avoid unintentional clicking on ads.

Ad Exchange from DoubleClick

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

NewYork Times reported, DoubleClick set up a Nasdaq-like exchange for the buying and selling of digital advertisements. Some days before we have discussed about Google and Microsoft in talks to buy the company. DoubleClick about link exchange has said that,

He described the exchange as a mix of eBay and Sabre, the airline reservations system that travel agents use. The service will let advertisers see information about what competitors bid for particular ads, in the same way that eBay shows visitors past bids. And it will let publishers try to ensure that they sell their ad spots at the highest possible price, the way that airlines try to do with the seats they sell.

As DoubleClick’s exchange launches and competes with Right Media and other online advertising solutions, this link exchange will make DoubleClick more attractive to the acquirers like Microsoft and Google.

Google Launches Pay-Per-Action ads

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

Google had announced the launch of Pay-Per-Action ads. Google has made a new pricing model for the actions performed after landing on a page. This can be possible in Google content networks.

Pay-per-action advertising is a new pricing model that allows you to pay only for completed actions that you define, such as a lead, a sale, or a pageview, after a user has clicked on your ad on a publisher’s site.

A beta test page is launched : Pay-Per-Action Beta. You can create text ads, image ads and new text link ads. Vedio ads is not enabled yet. The ad should be paid only if the action is completed and not for clicks or impressions. The conversion tracking from Google gives you the information whether the action defined is completed or not. The Beta test is enabled only for U.S. users.

Hope this system from Google can save our money upto some extent.

Dish is the nation’s leader in high definition and interactive TV programming. As per Venture beat this move from Google was due to the high revenue made from Mountain View search engine and U.S. television advertising market.
